Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?
With aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, or changes in weight (either weight gain or weight loss), the nipples descend below their natural position at or above the breast fold. That is called “breast ptosis”. Women with breast ptosis are good candidates for mastopexy or breast lift to bring back the natural youthful appearance of the breasts.
What are the most common signs that could indicate a need for breast lift?
Some of the most common signs that call for a breast lift include: Loose skin, wrinkled breasts, sagging breasts, elongated breasts, stretched nipples or areolae, sagging nipples or areolae, nipples or areolae that point downward.
How does a breast lift work?
Breast lift surgery or mastopexy is a very common and successful cosmetic surgery. It is an operation where the position of the nipples and the shape of the breast are improved by removing excess skin and possibly a small amount of breast tissue. In this process, the nipple stays attached to native breast tissue and is lifted to the natural position at the level of the breast fold. With the removal of the excess skin, the native breast tissue is relocated to provide a more youthful appearance.
What is the difference between a “breast lift” and a “breast reduction”?
Breast lift and breast reduction have similarities and differences. If a patient has an excessive amount of breast tissue with a large breast size, they may be a candidate for a breast reduction. In breast reduction, a higher amount of breast tissue is removed compared to a breast lift and nipples are lifted.
If patients do not have heavy breasts and only have droopiness of the nipple (enough breast tissue in the wrong place), they are a candidate for the breast lift procedure where mainly only excess skin is removed and breast tissue is preserved/relocated to provide a more youthful and perkier look.
How many years does a breast lift last?
The outcome of a breast lift procedure usually lasts for 10-15 years. Factors like significant weight fluctuation, pregnancy, or breastfeeding after surgery may affect this duration.
How can you maintain the results of a breast lift?
Following a healthy lifestyle is the key. Avoiding significant weight fluctuation, staying on a high protein and low sugar diet, avoiding unprotected sun exposure or tanning, and wearing a supportive bra are some of the measures you can take to maintain your outcome.
Do you have to get implants with a breast lift?
Not necessarily. During your consultation with Dr. Najafian, he will examine the amount of native breast tissue you have. Depending on how much native breast tissue patients have, they may or may not need additional procedures to add volume to the breast. These additional procedures could be breast implant placement or fat grafting.
What is the recovery process like? How long does it take to heal?
Dr. Najafian has a particular technique and pain control regimen that helps patients to have a quick recovery. Most patients need only minimal pain medication, are comfortable after surgery, and describe their experience as much better than what they expected!
However, in order to have a smooth recovery and avoid potential complications related to trauma, high blood pressure or heart rate, we require our patients to take one week off to focus on healing and avoid any vigorous activities for 6 weeks. We will go over all the instructions in detail at your preop visit and will provide you with a handout with all the information that you would need.
Depending on your examination, we will discuss what technique is appropriate for you and what scars for that technique would look like.
Scar healing takes about 6 weeks, when scars will be well healed and minimally visible. However, scars will continue to lighten up over the next 6-12 months.
