Educating Spine Surgeons on Breast Reduction’s Role in Back Pain Management
Dr. Najafian and his team most recent publication is on raising awareness among spine surgeons on the role of breast reduction in management of back pain.
Large breasts -AKA macromastia- is a common cause of back pain in women that is often neglected by primary care doctors and spine surgeons.
Focusing on treatment of back pain without addressing the root cause, would just lead to a never ending cycle of chasing the pain.
In many women, the cause of back pain is the impact of large breasts on posture and spinal column and without properly addressing this issue, even surgical treatment of the spine would not result in a long lasting relief.
Breast reduction is a known medically necessary procedure that can prevent and treat back pain in women with macromastia.
Dr. Najafian found the gap in the literature and realized the lack of awareness in the spinal surgery community regarding this issue and teamed up with Dr. Christopher Bono, spine surgeon at Harvard to publish a review article in the top ranked journal of spine surgery “ The Spine Journal” to address this issue.
